"You guys did a very great job," professor Martin Hellman, a Turing Award winner, told this to Hu Zhiwen, one of the volunteers in our school. From August 24th to 25th, at the 2019 Global Scientists Summit held in Chongqing, 21 volunteers from Chongqing University's School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, following the spirit of hospitality, the traditional virtues of Chinese nation and promoting friendly exchanges between China and foreign countries, top international academics, ,actively offered volunteering service and did their best in their positions, making the conference all the more successful.

Volunteers began to perform their work after the overall deployment by the Municipal Science and Technology Bureau on August 21. From the time the scientists got off the plane, they accompanied with the scientists all the time, making travel plans, arranging traveling time and vehicles for the scientists, and trying to satisfy their needs as much as possible before ensuring the guests’ safety. The concierge volunteers at the venue, together with the organizers, rehearsed the conference process every day in the small hours, striving for making full preparation. In doing so, they practiced every step repeatedly and memorized the venue layout and its surrounding facilities. They fulfilled their tasks during the two-day meeting by ensuring the smooth progress of the forum as planned and meeting the demands of participating guests and professional audience timely.

During these days, the volunteers took their responsibilities and worked hard to serve the summit. With vitality and professional skills, they showed foreign guests great volunteering spirits of Chongqing University and even China as a whole with their excellent professionalism, winning high praise from domestic and foreign guests and organizers. At the end of the forum, Prof. Ada Jonath, the 2009 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, offered her accompanying volunteer, Cheng Fang, to take a photo with her and said “You deserve it.”, which is a high recognition from her. After accompanying with the scientists, the volunteers not only gained the recognition and appreciation from scientists, but also their pursuit for knowledge and academics. Meanwhile, they also improved themselves in offering services.

In recent years, the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures has been focusing on fostering internationalized students by introducing policies to encourage them to participate in international exchanges and pitching in the internationalization process of Chongqing, like providing translation and volunteering services for various international conferences. In doing so, while promoting local development, it broadens students’ horizon and improves their overall quality.
